Sheng Xinyi responded stubbornly to Father Sheng, "Dad, I'm not breaking up, so you'd better forget this ridiculous idea. I think Senior Chen Ge is wonderful. Besides, if you won't arrange a job, I can refuse them myself, and I'll pretend you never said a word about me breaking up."

She hung up the phone in a fit of pique.

By the time Sheng Xinyi returned to the room, Mother Chen and the others had their eyes fixed on her.

Mother Chen was especially eager to press her, "Well?"

"Auntie, I'm afraid it's not going to work. My dad doesn't really agree. Maybe you should think of another way." Sheng Xinyi said to Mother Chen.

Mother Chen had assumed that arranging a job would be no problem at all and that the matter would be settled. But after hearing Sheng Xinyi's words, she was utterly disappointed.

Even Auntie and Elder Cousin had their objections.

Auntie said sullenly, "If that's how it is, then forget it. Our family will think of something else. Son, let's go home."

Mother Chen grew anxious, "Hey, don't be like that. Let him stay."

"I can't afford to stay here. Don't you see there's a Young Miss in this house? Would I dare let him stay here, without fear of being looked down on by the Young Miss!" Auntie stormed off, ready to take Elder Cousin and leave.

Mother Chen panicked, "Then what about my land!"

Auntie said in annoyance, "Your family shows no kindness, so don't blame me for showing none either. You won't even help me with this little thing, you don't treat me like family, so I certainly won't be helping you!"

Auntie left with Elder Cousin.

Mother Chen immediately grew miserable. She slapped her thigh, "This won't do! I'll have to pay back so, so much money!"

She immediately turned her spearhead toward Sheng Xinyi, "It was just finding a job, nothing wrong with that, so why couldn't you do it? Your family isn't short on money, and isn't short on connections either. Your dad could do it easily. Why won't you help with even this little favor!"

Mother Chen being so fierce to Sheng Xinyi clearly frightened her a bit. She bit her lip, at a loss.

"Auntie, this really can't be done. After all, my dad's work is special. If he doesn't agree, there's nothing I can do about that."

"If you can't even help our family, then you're not much use!" Mother Chen snapped in a fierce scolding.

She had assumed her family had climbed up to a rich branch and could make all her poor relatives green with envy. But who would've thought this Young Miss had no real power.

Since she had no real power, then what was the point of keeping her around?

She couldn't help their family, and she even harmed their family's interests.

Surely a village girl from the countryside would be more reliable.

Little White Dove saw how cold and unfeeling his mother was and grew angry too, "Elder Cousin has hands and feet of his own. If he wants to be an official, let him work hard himself. Why blame Xinyi? This was against the rules to begin with, it can't be done, so on what basis are you saying these things!"

"Now you're really turning your arm outward! This is infuriating. Are you sure you want to side with her and not me? In the future, when you can't keep her in line and have to watch her family's every mood, you'll have regrets!" Mother Chen pointed at Little White Dove's nose and cursed furiously.

Sheng Xinyi was a bit unhappy as well, "Auntie, having our family overstep our bounds to do these things is already excessive. I helped you for old times' sake, but if I can't help, there's no need to be so pushy."

Little White Dove tried hard to calm down. He nodded at Sheng Xinyi, then said to the pushy Mother Chen, "Mom, how about this. Tomorrow I'll go with Elder Cousin to look for work, or else I'll tutor him in his studies so he can test for the civil service."

Mother Chen rolled her eyes at Little White Dove, "Do you think your Elder Cousin is the studying type? If he could've passed, he would've passed long ago. If he could've settled for a local job, would he have come to our door to bring this up? This is clearly blackmail."

"Even if it's blackmail, we can't just give in to them completely. We don't want the land, at worst we'll spend some money to buy from another family, but we can't just swallow this insult!" Little White Dove said firmly.

However, to Mother Chen, his words were far too naive.

Clearly this matter couldn't be settled so easily. It was all because Sheng Xinyi hadn't properly helped that things had come to this.

Mother Chen slapped her thigh, "What rotten luck, this life is unlivable!"

The atmosphere grew very oppressive.

There was nothing to be done. Little White Dove could only accompany Sheng Xinyi out for a stroll first, to clear her mind and keep her from feeling so bad.

It wasn't until late evening, when it was time to eat, that Little White Dove brought Sheng Xinyi back.

But at the dinner table, Mother Chen turned up her nose and picked at everything about Sheng Xinyi, deeply dissatisfied.

Little White Dove couldn't stand it and said a word for Sheng Xinyi, but Mother Chen turned around and said she was full, then went straight off to sleep.

Sheng Xinyi looked at Little White Dove rather helplessly.

"I'm sorry, my mom's just got this foul temper." Little White Dove said apologetically.

Sheng Xinyi lowered her eyelids, "This is more troublesome than I thought."

Dating really only involved two people.
